I had the opportunity to have a sit down interview with recording artist JMSN. We spoke about his latest album It Is, his decision to turn down a record deal with Sony Records, ,the influence that his early upbringing had on his music, and so much more.
Sierra: So you just released your album It Is, It came out on May 6th, 2016 how does it feel that you are about to perform in front of such a huge crowd?
JMSN: Good, really good. Yeah, I love Atlanta you know in general. Every time I come out here the energy is great. We played in a smaller room last time, and it’s cool to move to a bigger venue.
Sierra: What has been your favorite place to perform while on tour?
JMSN: Damn, that’s a hard question because there’s so many that are good. Texas, Phoenix, Los Angeles. I don’t know if I have a favorite because there are so many good ones. I’m just happy people are coming out.
Sierra: You produced “Nibiru” for Ab-Soul and have collaborated with him? What was it like working with Ab-soul?
JMSN: It was good. He’s cool and chill. I like chill. I like easy.
Sierra: You don’t like people who are turnt up lol?
JMSN: When the time is right but when I’m trying to work with people I don’t want it to be like that. It can be a party when you’re listening to the song and done recording, though. I just definitely like people who are chill and easy.
Sierra: Why did you decide to turn down a deal with Sony Records and sign a deal with Atlantic Records at the beginning of your career?
JMSN: Oh I did that because there was miscommunication between Sony Records and myself. I really couldn’t communicate with management that well so that’s why. I know it sounds weird lol.
Sierra: It does sound weird!
Sierra: At what age did you learn how to play instruments because I know you played instruments on the album Love Arcade?
JMSN: Uhhhh I started to play guitar at the age of ten, and that’s my main instrument. I started to play the piano at like the age of eight, but I didn’t play that for long, so I decided to stick with guitar. I’m still not that great at that [laughs]. But I’m working on it.
Sierra: How does this album differ from your debut Album Priscilla, The Blue album, or your EP Pllaje?
JMSN: The new one is evolved and more so of what I want to do. More of the direction I want to go. It’s an evolution of me as a person. Me as a musician, me as a singer. You know all those in one and just evolving and exploring as well. It’s not where I want to go as a genre but as far as getting better at what I do. Genre doesn’t limit me, but I just want to keep doing what I feel.
Sierra: You had a pretty rough childhood. From seeing abuse and being on welfare what was that like?
JMSN: Oh no it’s all relative. Things are only rough if you decided there rough. When you’re a kid and growing up in surroundings, you don’t know any better. You can call anything rough. For example, some rich kids probably think they have it rough because their dad won’t buy them a car or something. It’s all about the person. I don’t like to go back to the past or sob story sh*t.
Sierra: Do you feel like it has impacted your music in any way?
JMSN: It has made me who I am as a person for sure. I don’t take anything for granted, but that’s for life in general. When I was younger, I didn’t think anything was wrong.
Sierra: You thought it was normal?
JMSN: Yeah, my mom made me believe that it was.
Sierra: Who are some of your favorite artists that you have worked with?
JMSN: This guy named Fourteen KT. He’s from Michigan and is a producer. He’s cool to work with because it was just so easy to work with him. I just like easy. People who are easy to work with and are enjoyable. He is one that sticks out to me. We work a lot still. Freddy Gibbs is cool. Ab-Soul of course. Anybody I’ve worked with or continue to work with, I enjoyed working with them. I don’t pick favorites.
Sierra: Okay, I know you don’t pick favorites but name your three favorite songs off your album?
JMSN: “F**k You”, “Cruel Intentions”, and “Most All!”
Sierra: Awesome, Thank You for joining me!
JMSN: No problem, that was pretty easy!
