Since the premiere of the series finale back in May of 2019, fans of Game of Thrones have been eager for a chance to revisit the exciting world of Westeros. Although many fans were disappointed in the anti-climatic ending, waiting for a better conclusion with George R. Martin’s books has proven a difficult task as the Game Of Thrones writer has yet to even announce a release date for the next book in the series. Despite the series’ disappointing conclusion, HBO has given itself a chance to win fans back over with the possibility of spin-offs in the works.
This year HBO has confirmed that it has already begun to develop a new Game Of Thrones spin-off entitled House of Dragon, that will focus on the Targaryen family. Then, as recently as Friday, programming president Casey Bloys teased that the network may explore the world of Game of Thrones further through other series. In an interview with Variety, he spoke on the matter, comparing GOT to other popular franchises like Star Wars and Marvel, stating, “Those are fantastic properties that are decades and decades old. I don’t know that it would get that big, but certainly, it is a great resource that we have and an amazing world. So I don’t think it’s just going to be the one [show] for the rest of its life.”
However, these possible spin-offs would likely not hit the small-screen anytime soon due to difficulties with production in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. As of now, House of Dragons is set to be released sometime in 2022 and begin production in early 2021. While little is known about the show so far, it has been revealed that the show will follow the rise of the Targaryen house 300 years before the events depicted in Game of Thrones. BAFTA-winning actor Paddy Considine is set to star in the series as King Viserys I. With new showrunners set to take over the new series, House of Dragons seems to be starting off in good shape. However, with the series still a way out, fans will have to enjoy the original series in the meantime.
