This past Wednesday Disney awarded its fans by releasing the long-awaited teaser trailer for Raya and The Last Dragon. Last year at D23 Expo, Disney first announced the project along with a slate of upcoming animated movies. Then after a year of silence on the film, Disney finally graced fans with this jaw-dropping new teaser trailer and first-look poster. The trailer immediately elicited a wave of excited responses as fans across the globe enjoyed the action-packed sequences, and cultural authenticity already on display in the trailer.
Although not much has been revealed about the movie yet, so far we know that the film will follow a skilled warrior named Raya. Viewers will watch Raya as she sets out on a journey to find the last dragon that is her people’s last hope of defeating the evil forces that threaten their way of life. Featuring Star Wars actress, Kelly Marie Tran, and rapper and comedian Awkwafina, this thrilling adventure film is set to hit theaters next year but is already making a big impact on audiences, especially those of Southeast Asian descent.
The latest addition to the Disney Princess Family, Raya will be the first Disney Princess of Southeast Asian descent to grace the big screen. Many have already taken to social media to express how much the representation means to them and emphasizing the importance of accurate and respectful portrayals of non-western cultures in the media.
With a great story, a killer cast, and meaningful representation this film is sure to become a fan favorite of Disney lovers. While the film is still a ways away, this teaser trailer is enough to get us all pumped for its release in March of 2021.
