John Singleton was one of the greatest creators of our time. He directed many well-known movies such as Baby Boy, and Boyz n the Hood! He also gave many people their shot at fame and jump-started their career in acting an example of this is Taraji P. Henson. Sadly, John Singleton’s life was cut short when he suffered a stroke early last week. The world will miss John and is very appreciative for everything he has done in the creative aspect of the world. If you are not familiar with Johns work, then keep reading. Below is a comprised list of movies by John that I feel like everyone should check out in no particular order.
1. Boyz n the Hood
John Singleton wrote and directed the 1991 film, Boyz N The Hood. The film opened many doors for him. John was nominated for Best Director at the 64th Academy Awards for this film. He was the first African American to be nominated for this award.
2. Baby Boy
Baby Boy was released in theaters everywhere in 2001! This movie was Taraji’s debut film as well as Tyrese’s as he was crossing over from the music avenue. Snoop Dog was also a part of this movie as well. This movie went on to almost make a gross of $30 million dollars. Till this very day, the film has a firm imprint on our culture.
3. Poetic Justice
This movie is great, it is one of my favorites that he has done. This movie starred Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur. Janet actually received many nominations from this movie, especially because she was on the soundtrack. This movie is a classic and I recommend anyone to watch it. And even now in this generation, the movie has resurfaced and people are still referring to box braids as “Poetic Justice Braids”.
4. Higher Learning
John wrote, produced and directed this film. This movie starred Omar Epps, who was rising to fame quickly. This movie came out in 1995 and follows the lives of three African American students who are starting at a university. Tyra Banks is also featured in the film as well.
5. Four Brothers
Four brothers is a really great movie and it really embodies how you don’t have to be blood to be family. This movie came out in 2005 and starred Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andrè Benjamin, and Garrett Hedlund. Although John did not write this movie, he directed it.
John Singleton was a huge director so I know many people have watched his movies. If you see a movie on here that is not on the list, please feel free to recommend it in the comments below.
