When it comes to technology, new apps for people to enjoy are created daily. The newest app trend of these past couple of months being Clubhouse, which is known for having many voice audio chatrooms for users. However, a new app that connects black and brown people has been created by Nigerian-American, Adeyinka Adegoke.
Adegoke has a wonderful resume behind his name, which consists of him being an engineer, certified scrum master, and accomplished business analyst. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ladoke Akintola University in Nigeria. He then earned a double Master’s in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island and then a Master’s in Petroleum Technology from the University of Teesside in Middlesbrough, UK.
Adegoke created ” Melanin People” so black and brown people could have a safe space to interact with each other. He also thought the idea of black and brown people to have an internet community where they could share their personal goals and growth would be considered a positive aspect of internet apps. Especially with many cases of black and brown people on apps like Twitter getting cyberbullied and harassed because of things like racism. The platform also will be able to connect entrepreneurs and organizations to a platform to be able to promote their brands. Even if you don’t have a brand or organization to promote, you still can use the app to communicate with different people online. No matter if your interest is fashion, sports, entertainment, or music, you will still be accepted in the open community of users on Melanin People.
Adegoke sees a bright future for his app. In an interview, he stated, “As MelaninPeople, our spending is projected to grow significantly in the years ahead according to Nielsen. Since 2000, the African-American market has seen a 114% increase in buying power, which was estimated to be $1.3 trillion in 2018. In fact, the minority markets in the United States Of America have a combined $3.9 trillion buying power, according to Newswise (2019).”
Soon, it’s predicted for Melanin People to grow as the years go on. Hopefully, more people would join the app in the near future so black and brown people can exclusively have an app that caters to them.
