If You Like: Dr. Dog, Sea Wolf, The Walkmen
American rock band Delta Spirit recently finished up their fall tour with Deer Tick. Before 2020, the last time anyone had heard of this rock band was back in 2015 with their Into the Wild studio album. Coming off hiatus, it shows time hasn’t slowed down the five-piece group as their lastest outing proves so. Bringing their signature sound of yearning and rustic vocals, Delta Spirit outshines their previous work. Keeping within the tradition of their other projects, Delta Spirit released the deluxe complete album of their 2020 work, What Is There?. In earlier years, Delta Spirit’s music has managed to capture a huge following due to movies and tv shows.
From their humble beginnings in New York, Delta Spirit has always managed to craft a balance between storytelling and musical visual landscapes. In 2007, Delta Spirit independently released their debut album, Ode to Sunshine. The project propelled them to book numerous tv spots like Late Night with Conan O’ Brien just a year later. Their second album, History From Below, allowed the band to experiment more with alternative sounds of rock. The album peaked at number 179 on the Billboards Top 200 chart, further proving the band’s magic. It wasn’t until their third and fourth albums, Delta Spirit and Into the Wild, that the band made headway into the mainstream of rock.
Into the Wild became their biggest album to date, earning the 26th spot on Billboards Rock Albums Chart. The album reached number 15 on the Alternative Albums chart. During the height of its success, the band toured while earning spots at major music festivals. The project contained some of their songs like “From Now On” and “Live On.” The album gave a challenge to the status quo of many rising rock bands. Being able to deal with the sudden mainstream success while holding boots to the ground really made for a well-connected band and sound.
Fast forward to last year, Delta Spirit is more battle-worn and hardened in its musical approach. Touching on topics like love, loss, the existence of time and space, we see the band attempting to find its footing. While being out of the game for a while left Delta Spirit a little off-balance, the band is still and great as ever.
