Since the release of her debut album Over It, Atlanta R&B singer & Love Renaissance (LVRN) artist Summer Walker has been out of the spotlight for quite some time, writing and working on music with boyfriend, producer and songwriter London on da Track. During that time, Walker have received several awards and accolades, such as winning “Album of the Year” at the 2020 Soul Train Awards.
Recently, the “Come Thru” singer finally made headlines where she announced the launch of her record label, “Ghetto Earth Records” in a joint venture with parent company, Interscope Records.
In a recent interview with Billboard about why she has chosen the name for the label and her reasoning for starting this imprint, Walker said, “I came up with Ghetto Earth because earth is ghetto. I don’t wanna be controlling over my artist’s music. I want them to be fully involved in everything they put out. I’m just here to support and help them get to wherever it is they’re trying to go in life.”
Since the launch of Ghetto Earth Records, the first artist to sign to the label was upcoming R&B singer NO1-NOAH, who first appeared on Walker’s Life on Earth‘s EP on tracks such as “SWV” and “White Tee.”
“I feel like being on Summer’s team, Ghetto Earth Records is the right home for me to be as creative as possible as an artist,” NO1 stated.
With all that is going in the music industry, from former Philadelphia R&B/Soul singer Jaguar Wright exposing and making accusations about several major artists in the industry back in July to New York R&B artist and actress Teyana Taylor‘s early retirement from music, do you feel that this is the right move for Summer Walker to create her own label and give artists the full control of their music?
