Grammy-nominated Dj, Steve Aoki, has teamed up with some of the biggest names in hip hop for his new album Kolony. Kolony features artist such as ILoveMakonnen, Lil Yachty, Migos, 2 Chainz, Lil Uzi and many more to create the hip hop crossover. He remains to his EDM roots by featuring artists such as DVBBS, Big Gigantic and Yellow Claw to make his trap album come alive.
This exciting 10-track collection has new beats and collaborations unlike his previous works. For Aoki, this merge of rap and EDM started while working with Lil Uzi Vert in the studio for a week. He used to focus on the great drops, but instead he learned to pay attention to the artists’ creativity for each song.
“It wasn’t about the big drop, because it wasn’t about the EDM. It was about finding a section to allow him to be [himself],” Aoki mentions referring to Lil Uzi Vert.
Other artist would stop by to be featured in the album, each bringing their own crew for support to the studio. For Aoki, he felt like it became a “colony” of friends working together to bring out a new type of sound. And from that moment the title for the album came about.
“We’re like a colony, because it just felt like the energy in the room was more vibrant. It was a lot of energy from people flowing from the studio, and I loved that think tank, that group collaboration, and spirit.”
Kolony marks a new transition from his EDM and electro-house music such as the Neon Future albums. Check out Steve Aoki Presents Kolony below. This high-energy sound will leave you impressed and wanting for more.
