Kanye West lovers, Drake lovers, and music lovers all around, you are all in for a treat! It appears that two of rap’s biggest stars will join forces to create a joint album! Drake’s 7th annual OVO Fest in Toronto recently passed (and from what we’ve seen in the media, it was amazing). This year’s festival contained the likes of Rihanna, Future, and more. It is clear that Drake loves surprises, as he shocked fans with the appearance of Rihanna on Sunday (Jul. 31). Rihanna took the stage and performed some of her own hits along with the bubbly island “Too Good” tune with Drake for the first time. Following her epic arrival to Toronto, Drake bounced back with yet another surprise on the following Monday (Aug. 1). The 6 god brought out both Rihanna and Kanye West, for OVO Fest’s final night.
Of course you cannot just invite Ye somewhere and not expect him to bless the stage. To the fans surprise and enjoyment, the 39-year-old performed a surprise set. It was during Ye’s set, the speculations and rumors of this joint album seemed to be true. During the set, Yeezy stated, “Toronto I got one question for you, Is y’all ready for this album? I’m not talking about Pablo. I’m not talking about Views. I wanna ask y’all right now, are y’all ready for this album?”
According to Rap-Up, after Kanye said this, Drake appeared from the back of the stage and the two “gestured” at one another before Ye proceeded to perform “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1.” Following Kanye’s questions to the crowd, Drake said, “What my brother was asking before was, are you ready if we make an album?” he told the crowd. “That’s what he was asking.”
The authenticity of the statement seems real, seeing as though earlier in the year, Kanye initially brought up the joint album talks during his interview with “The Breakfast Club.” During the interview, Ye told the crew the joint album was originally supposed to be titled, “Wolves.” “The ‘Wolves’ song came from a conversation that me and Drake had, when we were gonna do an album together. The album was called Wolves.”
Towards the beginning part of May, in an interview on OVOSOUND Radio with Zane Lowe, Drake sat down and spoke on the relationship / friendship between he and Kanye and also about this joint project.
“ I love [Kanye]. He’s a really good guy. I grew up with him as a role model. Always given him credit that’s why we’re here right now. It’s amazing to be his friend”
Drake continued saying, “We have a few things that we’ve worked on. It’s all about finding a place for it. We can link each other and discuss anything. Feeling a way on this or just leisure talk, we have a great relationship. I hope we get more music out. We were supposed to do a mixtape together an album together… You never know, he’ll call me tonight and say, ‘I’m putting these two songs out tonight.'”
Kanye has already made it known that he and Drake have worked closely together. Rewind a few months back, when Kanye tweeted about Drizzy helping him with The Life of Pablo’s “30 Hours” and “Father Stretch My Hands” tracks. He also stated that Drake would stop by his home simply to help him and that he, future, and himself had new music coming in the future.
Could this future joint album be that music in which Ye was speaking? Is this why Kanye wants the “beef’ between Apple and Tidal to diminish? If there truly is to be a joint album, will it release on Apple Music or Tidal? Honestly, just the thought of the two collaborating sends chills down everyone’s spines. Will the world be able to handle the likes of Kanye West and Drake in one album? While this announcement leaves several questions unanswered, we are ready for whatever you two decide to throw our way!
