Many 90s sitcoms have made a comeback to television and streaming platforms. As of lately, reboots of 90s sitcoms have been becoming more popular lately, from Fuller House to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
But we probably can all agree that the talks of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s reboot sounds exciting, and having Will Smith produce it, is the cherry on top.
Will Smith and Morgan Cooper, writer and producer of the reboot version, are teaming up to bring fans what they’ve been missing since 1996.
The show is expected to portray the life of a Black man navigating the challenges and obstacles of living in American. It also holds the original storyline of moving from Philly to Los Angeles and the names of our favorite characters remain. The difference is that it’s modernized to fit today’s society.
The remake came about last year after Smith had discovered Cooper’s trailer of the Fresh Prince’s remake. The video showcased the main character fighting at the park and facing the police after he is caught carrying a gun for protection in Philadelphia, which gets him sent to live in Bel-Air with his Uncle Phil. It then shows Will finding basketball as his escape and settling in the new state.
Soon after coming across that, Smith had reached out to Cooper for an interview on his YouTube Channel. In the interview, Cooper explained that he grew up watching the show and felt that it was a part of him. He also mentioned that telling this modernized story is important. Smith approved of the dramatic version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and gave Cooper his respects.
According to Insider, “The reboot is reportedly being offered to streaming services including NBC’s Peacock, Netflix, and HBO Max. HBO Max is the current streaming home for the original series.”
There is no release date set for the reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but the trailer has us anxiously waiting for it.
