For a while now, I’ve broadened my style horizons and found new and different ways to express myself through clothes. In the process of this I have received lots of comments in my “fashion sense”.
This comment always threw me for a loop, as I really don’t know much about fashion itself and don’t think about trends when I am creating a piece or an outfit.
Upon further thought, I realized a fine line involving fashion that is so often overlooked: Fashion versus Style. Fashion can be defined as the thousands of trends and sometimes unwearable ensembles created by designers.
To me, fashion is the connection, through clothing, to the outside world. Fashion focuses less on the wearer themselves and more on the garments they wear.
On the contrary, style is the expression of oneself through clothing. It is the internal connection of one’s thoughts, feelings, and identity. When styling your own outfit, you may find that it perfectly reflects your personality or mood. This creates an internal connection between you and your outside appearance. Whereas fashion keeps the focus on the clothing itself, rather than the wearer.
Regardless of whether you are a fashion fiend or strictly focus on styling yourself based off your mood, we can all agree that clothing is one of the most common and fun ways to connect yourself to the world and express yourself to others.
