It’s been 30 years since the film Coming to America and it remains one of Eddie Murphy‘s most accomplished movies. Well regarded by critics and a box time office grossed at $289 million, it balanced Murphy’s passion to propel himself into a role of a romantic leading man while still maintaining a broad audience appeal. So now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the long-awaited sequel doesn’t seem far-fetched.
In the original film, Murphy played prince Akeem who is the prince of African royalty who travels to Queens and in turn, falls in love with a woman who actually loves him and doesn’t have to be in an arranged marriage of sorts. Arsenio Hall co-starred as his friend and James Earl Jones played his father.
Film directors Jonathan Levine of Warm Bodies and 50/50 and Emmy nominated Kenya Barris of Blackish hope to infuse more life into the sequel for Coming to America 2. Levine will be behind the camera and Barris is in the writing process for the script. Paramount productions have had an on and off again relationship with the project’s franchise but earlier this Spring, the okay was given to the project with original screenwriters Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield who were hired to write the first draft.
Consequently, at this given time, no report of a solid deal has been made public but, Eddie Murphy has been said to be involved with the sequel’s development, assuming the starring role that without a doubt, people have come to appreciate all over again.
