2018 is the year of inclusivity in all industries, and CoverGirl got the memo.
CoverGirl’s latest beauty campaign, “#IAmWhatIMakeUp,” features women who aren’t at the forefront of the beauty industry: 69-year-old Elon Musk, motorcycle racer Shelina Moreda, and personal trainer Massy Arias among others. Amy Deanna rounds out the list, becoming the first model with vitiligo to be a CoverGirl brand ambassador.
While the foundation is traditionally used to smooth out skin and make it one uniform color, Deanna celebrates what makes her unique and uses two different shades to highlight her different complexions.
Vitiligo, which causes the skin to lose its pigmentation, affects approximately 2 percent of the population. 2 percent of the population deserve to see people they can relate to in media, and Deanna is working to make that happen.
“I believe that inclusiveness will challenge unrealistic beauty standards within the beauty industry and in humanity,” Deanna said. “At the end of the day I am just like everyone else, I just happen to have spots. It’s a part of my identity, but it doesn’t define who I am.”
