When engaged in a heated conversation, people tend to want things to happen their own way, not considering the other person’s perspective. A lack of understanding adds more fuel to the flame leading to a conflict neither party desires. Thus, in order to reach a middle ground position, evaluation of the circumstances would be a great place to initiate a settlement.
Ask yourself questions before making up your mind to any decision. If you’ve repeatedly been in the same position and compromise only solved the problem temporarily, then its best to re-evaluate whether this is the best approach. Talking in depth about the issue and digging hard into the core of the relationship may lead to a more lasting solution as each party will know where the other stands.
Being respected for your willingness to lay things down and find a common ground is also critical to consider before compromising. If the other person doesn’t acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices you are making, then they may possibly take advantage of this in the future, setting an expectation in their mind that you will always react this way. No matter the relationship, your own personal values and fundamentals should come first as they are the ones to determine your happiness. Therefore, if a certain issue is of great importance to you, don’t simply give in just to satisfy the other person.
The best approach to a rising conflict would be collaboration. A high level of assertiveness and cooperation will lead to a “win-win” outcome both parties could benefit from. This is the main difference between compromise and collaboration; the first often leaves one or both parties dissatisfied. However, when time and resources are limited, a compromise could be a highly viable approach to problem-solving.
