Instagram’s users now have the option to formally include their pronouns in their profiles.
The announcement came May 11 and is helping the movement of gender inclusivity. When making new friends on the app, it will now be easier to ensure proper pronounces are being implemented in conversation.

Many users have added their preferred pronouns into their bios, but with the app’s new feature, those important describers have been granted a new special spot.
“We came to this decision given the behavior that people in our community were already partaking in, by adding their preferred pronouns to their names or in their bios. We added this field to make it a bit easier!” said a Facebook representative to PEOPLE.
Users can add up to four pronouns that will appear next to their name on their profile. However, there is also an option to keep pronouns visible for only followers. The privacy setting will automatically be applied to minors using the app.
hey besties remember that while the new instagram pronouns feature is cool, not everyone is safe sharing their pronouns with people in real life and we shouldn’t shame people for not having them in their bio

“This is currently available in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia,” according to the Facebook representative.
If your country is listed, but your account does not have the feature, be sure the app is up to date.
To access the new feature, simply go to your profile and click ‘edit profile.’ A text box will appear under your username.
The app has a wide array of pronouns available, however, if a user does not find their pronouns they have the option of submitting a request for Instagram to add the pronouns.
