When former college football head coach Urban Meyer was announced as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, no one could have predicted the events that would take place. We are five weeks into the NFL season and Meyer’s reputation is on the line. Despite his college football credits, Urban Meyer is running on borrowed time and white privilege alone. The Jags have since suffered in a frenzy of bad PR and an even worse start to the NFL season.
In the Jacksonville Jaguars organization, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone who still has faith in Meyer. According to various reports out of Jacksonville, Urban Meyer has lost the faith and trust of his locker room and front office. Things on the football side have not shaken out the way many would have hoped. After securing their franchise quarterback in 2021 NFL Draft 1st overall pick Trevor Lawrence, the team has continued to fall flat. Bad coaching and underdeveloped talent have the Jags (0-4) in 4th place in the AFC South. This can’t be placed solely on the shoulders of the players. Jags have various pieces to compete in a way that doesn’t bring shame up their mascot, Jaxson de Ville. The off-field issues of Meyer have cast a dark cloud over the team.
After suffering yet another defeat, Urban Meyer was filmed doing something weird in an Ohio bar. In the video, Meyer can be seen dancing with a woman who was later confirmed not to be his wife. The video of course blew up on social media and shined an even larger spotlight on the Jags organization. Jags owner Shad Khan stepped in to try and right the ship of his franchise.
“I have addressed this matter with Urban. Specifics of our conversation will be held in confidence,” Khan said in a statement released on Tuesday morning. “What I will say is his conduct last weekend was inexcusable. I appreciate Urban’s remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect. That will require a personal commitment from Urban to everyone who supports, represents, or plays for our team. I am confident he will deliver.”
As for Urban Meyer, the rookie NFL head coach is looking to right his wrongs. Meyer hopes to make amends and continue to bring out the best of the Jags. Urban Meyer released a statement following his meeting with the Jags front office.
“I just apologized to the team and staff for being a distraction,” Meyer said. “Just stupid and so I explained everything that happened and owned it. Just stupid. Should not have myself in that kind of position.”
Urban Meyer’s new outlook will be put to the test when the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the Tennessee Titans (2-2) this Sunday. In the last of their 8 meetings, the Titans have come out on top.
