Fresh off the success of a successful week 1 of BIG 3 Basketball action in Brooklyn, NY, The BIG 3 Basketball league made its way to Charlotte, NC at the Spectrum Center in front of a packed house of 10,651 fans. Week 2 also brought about some notable league changes and player debut. The league returned with an update to scoring rules, which reduced the games from first to 60 points, to first to 50, with halftime occurring when the first team reaches 25 points. The change was introduced by league co-founders Jeff Kwatinetz and Ice Cube, in an effort to shorten game length, and maximize the fan experience. Week 2 also introduced us to the league debut of NBA All Star, NBA Champion, and NBA Finals MVP, Chauncey Billups aka Mr. Big Shot.
Here is your recap for week 2 of the BIG3 brought to you by TUC.
Game 1: Trilogy vs 3 Headed Monsters
The opening matchup between the Trilogy and 3 Headed Monsters was the least competitive of the day judging from the score line. The Trilogy’s star big man, Al Harrington, was the player of the game with his 20 pts and 7 rebs boxscore line in the team’s 50 to 37 victory over the 3 Headed Monsters.
Game 2 : Power vs Killer 3s
Matchup 2 between Power and Killer 3s introduced us to the league debut of the Killer 3s co-captain, Chauncey Billups. Chauncey contributed with 15 pts including two 4-pointers. However his performance along with team captain, Stephen Jackson, 18 pts on 60% shooting from the field (9-15) wasn’t enough to hold off Cuttino Mobley and the Power as Mobley powered his team to victory with a game high 23 pts in the team’s 50-45 victory.
Game 3: Ball Hogs vs Tri-State
The match up between the Ball Hogs and Tri-State had all of the elements that make sports so compelling and must watch TV which is drama and the emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows within the frame of the game. The Ball Hogs trailed by 15 points heading into halftime ,but a great second half shooting performance from Rasual Butler and Derrick Byars who scored 19 pts each was enough to overcome the deficit in the team’s 50-44 victory.
Game 4 Ghost Ballers vs 3’s Company
Let’s face it, we all love comebacks in sports [except when it is against our teams] but I think we can all agree when I say that we hate late game meltdowns just as much [unless it’s our favorite team’s opponent]. The main event matchup of the day between the Ghost Ballers captained by Mike Bibby and the Killer 3’s captained by Allen Iverson, gave us exactly that. After trailing by 9 pts in the first half to the Killer 3’s, Mike Bibby and co. kicked it into a high gear by scoring the game’s final 10 points on the way to a 50 to 45 victory. Mike Bibby led the Ghost Ballers in scoring with 20 pts.
