TUC Exclusive with Jeff Chery: “The Haitian Mufasa”

It has been said that opportunities are not given, they are created. Not to mention keeping your mind, body, and soul affixed on the larger prize has the tendency to keep one focused on the long term wealth. Whether family, friends or the ideolody of a better life motivates you to achieve your aspirations, make it happen and accept no excuses for short comings. Recently I had the opportunity to talk with “The Haitian Mufasa” and it was nothing short of laughs and humbleness. Coming from nothing, Jeff realizes how his chance at stardom not only changed his life but those who are dear to his heart! Conquering the stage on Vh1’s hit show “Signed” was a clear depiction of pure talent.

JT: How does it feel to be in the room with music industry vets? Does that intimidate your craft?

HM: Ouuuhhhh! Mufasa gotta lot of respect for the 3 kings. Felt incredible.

JT: Describe your style of music in 4 words.

HM: Celebration bigger than life!

JT:  When did you realize music was going to be your career choice?

HM: Must of been about 9 years old I started hittin my high nidootees…

JT: Who are some producers/artists you are looking forward to working with?

HM: Any and everybody who is incredible doing their thing, whose willing to work. I love music, I’m open.

JT: What is your definition of true urban culture?

HM: I define true urban culture as grimy, beauty, art, history, style and a bit more compiled in the pot of gumbo… sauce!

JT: Why is giving back to the community so essiental for someone like yourself? Are you involved in any community service activities?

HM: I come from nothing, Leogane haiti is rough. I’m all about my people and family ya dig!

 

JT: If you were not a rapper, what would be your career and why?

HM: My only purpose in liiddyyffee is music.

JT: Why is it important to have the right team behind you as a new artist? (This includes PR, Management, street team, etc)

HM: With the right team, that’s more hands to help create better situations and opportunities to win.

JT: Where do you see your career in 5 years?

HM: Grammys guaranteed & giving back to my people in Haiti, movies too though cause I’m drippin to much gotta be on the screen.

JT: How has “Signed” changed your career as an artist?

HM: A LION out here still Roaming, a few more opportunities, but the real work starts here.

JT: What are some critical skills needed as a new artist?

HM: I’d say critical innovation skills, same information used in a new authentic creative way to help solve a problem ya dig.

JT: At any point on the show, did you feel replaceable? What was your drive to keep you grinding on “Signed”?

HM: Never. There will forever be 1 Mufasa. The drip is incredible, but my kids and my people where the two components fueling that driidiivvee!!

JT: Who was the first person you called when you realized you was “signed”?

HM: My kids.
