On July 17, Joey Bada$$ dropped his project The Light Pack for the first time in three years. The “rebirth” collection, as the New York rapper described it, showcased Bada$$ on another level of growth.
The Light Pack consists of three songs, “The Light,” “Shine” and “No Explanation” with the only featured artist, Pusha T. The simple yet powerful collection expresses the rapper’s evolved lyrics and personal reflections. He even shouts out to his late friend, rapper Capital STEEZ.
“This be them young OG vibes, think like I’m Steve Jobs/ Malachite stone, see the world all through STEEZ eyes/Dubai sand still stuck in my Vans still.”
In the visual for “The Light,” an opening message reads that Joey Bada$$ had taking part in a traditional spiritual ceremony. It then mentioned that he wanted to recreate it in the visual to show the power the Black community has.
“On June 16th, 2020 I chose to partake in a traditional voodoo ceremony in search of rebirth,” the intro read. “My purpose with this visual is to inspire Black people to realize their power and take it back, as I did. Don’t be afraid of who you are, that’s their job. We are magic.”
During the video, we’re able to see the Pro Era rapper involved in the ceremony, as they perform their rituals by dancing, chanting, and playing music. He then steps out of the building feeling like a new man and makes his way to the police station where the video ends.
The last time we received new music from Joey was in 2017 when he released All-Amerikkkan Bada$$. The Light Pack is available on all streaming platforms.
