R&B singer Brandy has given several features since her last album drop in 2012, but many fans have awaited her next album. Now it’s finally here – B7 was released on July 31.
The 15-track album includes features from her daughter Sy’rai, Chance the Rapper and Daniel Ceasar. Some of her tracks like “Love Again,” “Baby Mama,” “Rather Be,” and Borderline” were released before the album came out.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Brandy expressed that she spent time three years creating this album because she had to balance her music and television career. She was also dealing with legal issues with her old label, Chameleon Entertainment, that accused her of releasing music without discussion. After years of seeking a settlement, Brandy has become an independent artist.
“I really don’t like that it took me this long, but I’m glad that I didn’t rush it because when you’ve been absent from music for so long you want to make sure that it’s your best work. For me, I approached this album like this is my last project. What would I want it to sound like? How would I want to express myself? I took my time in that way.”
Brandy also shared that she enjoyed working and singing with her daughter on the “High Heels” track, which showcases women empowerment and growing through life. While listening to the single, you can find Sy’rai singing the first verse and chorus.
“So much fun! So exciting just to hear what she can do in the booth and how quick she is, and how her musicality is,” Brandy shared with Rolling Stone. “She’s just so talented. I love the way our voices sound together. I love the way we blend. Just to hear her doing so many different harmonies, it’s like, “Wow, she’s really been listening! She’s really inspired!” This is something that she’s born to do.
In the visual for “Borderline,” Brandy is captured in a straightjacket while being placed in a secluded white room. The R&B singer switches to a room from performing alone in an elegant room, then back again. At the end of the video, there is a message about mental health that shows numbers of people diagnosed with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and Bipolar Disorder. It also gives helplines and websites for those who need to reach out for more information.
