Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” makes you want to grab 6 of your best girlfriends, dance and drink champagne all night. From the pink-themed music video to the sassy lyrics, down to the bopping flow— this track gave everyone something to talk about. The song style seems to be new for Ariana, and fans were all for it. But for artists like Soulja Boy and Princess Nokia, this style didn’t seem so “new” at all.

It was pretty obvious that Ariana borrowed the melody in “Favorite Things”, from the classical musical The Sound of Music. However, Soulja Boy and Princess Nokia made claims that Ariana stole phrases and themes from their songs. Many compared Ariana’s single to Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag” and Princess Nokias “Mine”.
Despite the controversy, there’s no doubt that “7 Rings” wasn’t a success. The track had 16.9 million streams in its opening week, knocking off Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” for the most streams of a song in a week in the UK. The music video also holds the biggest YouTube debut of the year.
Although the track did so well, many artists still seem to be mad at her for it. Whatever the case may be, Ariana has yet to make any comments about her latest track.
