Hulu is known to have an endless list of films and series, varying from multiple genres. Some films move from one streaming service to another, which is why I have compiled a list of some of the best films Hulu has right now.
How to Be Single (2016)
This film is a modern rom-com with a twist. While usually romcoms focus on the eventual relationship of two characters, this film shows how several women navigate their relationships in the city of Manhattan. There are multiple break ups and the main character, Alice, befriends Robin, who teaches her how to be single. The characters are in different stages of their life, but they all share the same struggle of loneliness and wondering when the right time to settle down is. There are parties, city life, fashion, and pretty Christmas lights.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Based on the lives of one of the biggest rock bands in the world, this film takes us through Queen’s journey. It gives us insight into the struggles the band went through to make it to the top and how some in the music industry were sure they were never going to make it big. There are remakes of their most famous performances that portray the once-in-a-lifetime stage presence Freddie Mercury had. It shows how even when you have it all, things can fall apart if you feel alone. We get to see the Live Aid concert and parts of Mercury’s battle with AIDS until his death.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Set in the late 1700s, artist, and painter Marianne is hired to paint a portrait of Héloïse, an aristocratic woman who is betrothed to a wealthy man. She is told to pose as her hired companion and paint the portrait in secret since Héloïse refuses to be painted. The women meet and with various gazes and expressions, shared during the portrait process, and they fall in love. They have an affair, but like many queer stories, they end up living separate lives while longing for each other.
Broker (2022)
This film, set in South Korea, is about two people who run a business in taking abandoned babies dropped off at a church and selling them for adoption. Though what they do is considered human trafficking, they don’t sell the babies just for the money. They go out of their way into finding good homes for the abandoned children and help parents who struggle with the country’s adoption system. The story takes a turn when a sex worker drops off her baby only to regret it later. They don’t know that while everything is happening, detectives have been trailing them waiting to catch them in the act.
Hunger Games (2012)
Based on the science-fiction stories, the film follows the story of Katniss Evergreen, a skilled archer living in District 12 in the city of Panem. Each year two people from each district are chosen to fight to the death in a televised event. Katniss, unlike others, volunteers in place of her sister and uses her skills to stay alive. She finds out the dark secrets of those who run the games and loses many close to her when she tries to change the system.
