A24 is an indie film production and distribution company founded in 2012. Various films have received Academy Award nominations and awards. Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
This film is centered around a small Chinese American immigrant family who is struggling to make ends meet. Evelyn and Waymond own a Laundromat and are being audited by the IRS. They have a daughter, Joy, who has a strained relationship with her mother. During a meeting with the IRS inspector, Waymond is taken over by Waymond from the “Alphaverse.” He tells Evelyn that the multiverse is being threatened and she is the only one who can stop it. She later finds out that the person who started the black hole is Jobu, her daughter from another universe. All Jobu wanted to do was find any Evelyn, who would understand her and accept her for who she is.
Room (2015)
Based on Emma Donaghue’s 2010 novel, Room, was inspired by various real-life crimes. In this film, a woman is held abducted and held captive for seven years. She lives in a room with her five-year-old son, Jack, and tells him fairytales like Alice in Wonderland and the Count of Monte Cristo. For her, the room is a prison which is why she makes sure that for Jack, it is a whole different world full of life and possibilities. To protect Jack, who has never seen the outside world, she plans an escape that will save them both.
Moonlight (2016)
This film follows the life of a young African American man’s life. Divided into three parts, from adolescence to adulthood, Chiron grows up trying to find his place in the world. As a child, he lives in a poor neighborhood where he is bullied by other kids his age. His neighbor, Juan, takes pity on his home life and becomes a father figure to Chiron. His mother is a drug addict who gets worse once he becomes a teenager. He begins questioning his sexuality and kisses his childhood friend, Kevin. Their friendship ends in betrayal and violence until they meet once again in their adult years.
Past Lives (2023)
This film is about relationships and the Korean concept of in-yeon, where, when you meet people, it means you have met in a past life. Na Young grows up in South Korea, where she befriends Hae Sung. When she and her family immigrated to Toronto, they lose touch. Later an adult living in New York City, she meets Arthur at a writer’s retreat. Arthur and Na Young get married and Hae Sung plans a trip to meet her in New York. They all meet at a bar where Na Young tries to interpret for both men and Hae Sung asks her what might have happened if she never left Korea. She reassures Arthur that she loves him while also wondering if she is experiencing a past life.
Midsommar (2019)
This horror film is centered around Dani, a psychology student who is struggling with the death of her family. Her boyfriend, Christian, invited her to a midsummer festival at his ancestral commune out of pity. There are various disturbing ceremonies, and the group takes psychedelic mushrooms which makes Dani want to leave. She is convinced to stay and is crowned May Queen. She later learns that various members were used as human sacrifices and as May Queen, she has to choose the last sacrifice. Having gone insane after seeing Christian be unfaithful towards her, she chooses him as a sacrifice, and he is burned alive.
