You’ll be hearing the infamous Disney character Oscar Proud yelling, “Penny!” in the near future in the newest reboot of the 2001 Disney cartoon, “The Proud Family”. The series aired on Disney Channel in 2001, introducing the world to popular characters like Penny Proud, Oscar Proud, and Suga Mama.
The animated series followed 14-year-old Penny Proud as she tries to gain her independence and face typical teenage problems in junior high. Viewers also get an inside look at Penny’s family, each family member giving us a different personality that warmed our hearts. Penny and her family shenanigans will be returning on Disney+ with the reboot titled, “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder”. Photos of the characters from the show were released for the newest reboot on Feb. 26th.
The reboot of The Proud Family was announced last year, which it was reported that Original series creator/executive producer Bruce W. Smith and executive producer Ralph Farquhar are back along with story editor Calvin Brown. Reprising their Proud Family voice roles are Kyla Pratt as Penny, Tommy Davidson as Oscar, Paula Jai Parker as Trudy, Payton as Suga Mama, Karen Malina White as Dijonay Jones, Soleil Moon Frye as Zoey Howzer, and Alisa Reyes as LaCienega Boulevardez. Cedric the Entertainer is returning as Uncle Bobby. The only cast member that will not be returning is Orlando Brown, who voiced Dijonay’s huge crush Sticky Webb.

Alongside the original characters in The Proud Family, the reboot will be introducing a new character. This new kid on the block will be Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, who will be voiced by Keke Palmer. She’s described to be a 14-year-old activist, but it’s been rumored that Palmer’s character could be Jewish due to her last name of Leibowitz. They also described her as extremely mature and not afraid to shut someone down with her bluntness and wisdom.
Palmer was interviewed about her newest voice acting role and the young actress was beyond excited. Which she stated, “The people who loved watching the original will absolutely love watching the [revival]. And it’s going to introduce it to people who hadn’t seen the original! I love it because we’re talking about things that animated shows normally don’t talk about, and I think that’s something that we need.”
It hasn’t been released what exactly is the plot of the upcoming reboot, but the photos that have been released caused many fans to speculate their theories. Although we may be picking up from where the last season in 2005 left off, the photos that were released of the characters seemed to have some of them looking older than the last time viewers saw them. However, none of this is confirmed on how old each character actually is. This could just be a new art design for the characters. The show could just be starting off where it left off with 14-year-old Penny Proud.
You now can stream all seasons of “The Proud Family” on Disney+. Disney+ also released a descriptive video explaining “The Proud Family” family tree and how each character connects to each other.
