Premiering first in 2005, Avatar The Last Airbender has captivated audiences around the world with its excellent storytelling and fun-loving characters. Recently, this love for the animated series was reignited after Netflix put the original series and its sister sequel up on the streaming service this past summer. After years of only being available for purchase, the series was once again able to be enjoyed by its millions of fans as well as introduce new fans to the world of Avatar. With the Netflix live-action reboot of the series in development, the beloved series is seeing an increase in popularity as many take the time to reminisce and enjoy the series. Although the original cast has remained actively engaged with fans over the years, fans have long been waiting for a reunion of the original cast. However, it would seem that their prayers have finally been answered as Dante Basco, the voice of Zuko, announced that the cast would be reuniting in 2021.
On December 30th, the actor took to Twitter to share the exciting news writing, “As the year winds down… Here’s something to look forward to in 2021! #Avatar Reunion!!! Come hang with the #Gaang! https://noveriamanagement.com/atla-reunion (link in bio) #Aang #Zuko #Katara #Toph #Azula #Mai #Tylee #UncleIroh…” Fans have wasted no time expressing their excitement to see the original cast reunite after so many years. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Basco shared why he thinks the series has been able to remain so popular over the years, stating:
“Yeah, I think it kind of blew up out of nowhere, which is great and unexpected,” Basco explained. “But it really goes to show you: A, the power of Netflix, and B, the power of a really good project that kind of lasted over the years now. And it’s like you said, it may be more popular than when it was first out.”
A series near and dear to so many people’s hearts, Avatar The Last Airbender originally premiered on Nickelodeon. The series followed a fantastical world in which people possessed the ability to control an element, except for the Avatar who could master all four elements. Across the three seasons of the show, viewers followed the journey of Aang, an air nomad reluctant to come into his role as the Avatar, as he battles the imperialist Fire Nation. Through each season or book, viewers see as Aang and his friends grow and evolve, coming both into their powers and themselves. Although originally written as a kids’ show, Avatar The Last Airbender contains many adult themes and topics handled with a grace and maturity that makes the series so heartfelt. While the series may have concluded over a decade ago, this reunion proves that the memory and nostalgia of the show lives on.
