You didn’t ask for it but it is most definitely appreciated and needed. MGM( Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures) announced their production on a reboot of the classic horror slasher franchise, Child’s Play. That’s right everyone’s favorite killing doll, Charles Lee Ray aka Chucky will be spilling guts in a movie theater near you very soon.
The announcement regarding the reboot was made by MGM President, Johnathan Glickman and Orion Pictures President, John Hegeman. The film will star Aubrey Plaza (Ingrid Goes West, Legion, Parks, and Recreation) as Karen, Emmy and Tony nominee Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta, Widows, If Beale Street Could Talk) as Mike and Gabriel Bateman (Lights Out, American Gothic) as Andy, principal photography commenced in Vancouver. Rising filmmaker Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) will direct from Tyler Burton Smith’s (Kung Fury, Quantum Break video game) screenplay based on the original motion picture.
The official synopsis for the film reads as this “Child’s Play follows a mother (Plaza) who gives her son (Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.”
According to a source from Comic Book, the reboot will stray away from the supernatural elements of the original film in which Charles Lee Ray passed along his spirit and slasher tendencies into a Good Guy doll shortly before dying. Instead, the reboot will focus on Chucky being a defective “Buddy doll” with no limitations to learning and violence. Therefore. this Chucky doll will likely be rid of the charismatic and sinister personality of the original and instead be a hacked killing machine.
The original Child’s Play film grossed $44 Million Dollars on a $9 Million Dollar budget and introduced the world to a cultural icon that some may describe as cute but yet, menacing.
With another popular horror film franchise rebooting and hitting theaters next month and with another having its own video game, the golden age of horror seems to be returning for a new generation of scares.
