In a box office showdown, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” seized the top spot, surpassing “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which slipped to No. 2.
The latest installment in the MonsterVerse franchise, “The New Empire,” debuted with an impressive $80 million premiere, narrowly missing the opening weekend earnings of “Dune: Part Two.” Internationally, the film grossed an additional $114 million, achieving a global debut of $194 million, making it the highest-grossing global opening of the year, outperforming the Dune sequel.
Directed by Adam Wingard, the movie follows the events of 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” as the iconic monsters face off against a colossal new threat that challenges not only their existence but humanity itself. Starring Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, and Brian Tyree Henry, the film exceeded expectations with its action-packed storyline.
Meanwhile, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” experienced a significant 65 percent drop from its debut last week, earning $15.7 million domestically, bringing its total to $73.4 million. “Dune: Part Two” showed signs of slowing down in its fifth week of release, earning $11.1 million domestically, with a cumulative total of $252.4 million.
“Kung Fu Panda 4” maintained its position in fourth place, earning $10.2 million domestically in its fourth week, while “Immaculate,” starring Sydney Sweeney, rounded out the top 5 with $3.3 million in earnings domestically.
