A Quiet Place, only in its second week in theaters, has not only been successful at the box office but has also received acclaim for being one of the best movies this season—a surprising credit given its place in the horror genre.
John Krasinski, who wrote, directed, and starred in the film, has typically found himself in more lighthearted roles in the past, namely The Office, where he played the beloved character, Jim Halpert. Yet Krasinski took an arguably different role in A Quiet Place, using his skills to craft a film that brought its audience right into the silent, horrific world he created. A Quiet Place masterfully combined horror, science fiction, and family, creating a film that terrified only because of the audiences attachment and genuine care created by the actors.
Emily Blunt, Krasinski’s real life, and fictional wife, also stuns audiences in the movie by creating a relentless character dedicated to her family and their survival—all while about to give birth in a world where no noise is allowed to be made. Though the horror in the movie is genuine (scary aliens, tense silence, pain, you name it) the real reason audiences are drawn into the film exists in the relationships between the members of the family—therein lies regret, love, and sacrifice, themes that persist continuously through the film and heighten the stakes of every event.
The critical acclaim and box office success that A Quiet Place has received is deservedly so. Though the idea of a horror movie may not appeal to everyone, the delicacy in which the film approaches the genre all whilst crafting a true story of love and sacrifice makes it well worth a trip to the theater.
