In 1978, old time UK pop star, Kate Bush, released her chart topping number one single “Wuthering Heights.” Today, her legend lives on, as people across the world celebrate “The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever” by putting on their best Kate Bush impersonations.
Kate Bush is an English singer-songwriter who gained major popularity after the release of this tune and creating an iconic music video, with strange dance moves and a bright red dress. Her voice itself is easily recognizable, with a high pitch and incredibly clear intonation, sounding somewhat unconventional, but only in the best way. She may also be known by her duet with Peter Gabriel in the song “Don’t Give Up”.
“Wuthering Heights” itself is based on the novel by Emily Brontë. In the book, main characters Heathcliff and Cathy are lovers, and it can be seen in Bush’s lyrics that she takes direct events from the book to recreate scenes of the two. For example, when Cathy calls out to Heathcliff saying “I’ve come home, I’m so cold/let me in through your window”. The song is quite fitting of the gothic romance it seeks to portray.
Since the song topped charts in the UK, it has become a novel part of European music. The day of celebration really took off in 2013 when a flash mob of hundreds dressed up like Kate Bush, red dress and all, to sing and dance together to the beloved song.
This year, on July 15th as scheduled, thousands turned out in their red attire to pay tribute to the famed “Wuthering Heights” queen. A good two hundred people turned out in Dublin alone and danced the day away. Check out the original Kate Bush video below and maybe next time you can join too!
