It was bound to happen sooner or later with the current state of the company. The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 wasn’t just a massive loss for gamers, investors saw major losses. Andrew Temple, with other investors, filed a lawsuit against CD Projekt, the company behind Cyberpunk, this past Thursday. The lawsuit laid the foundation for a very winnable case in favor of Trampe. The main takeaway calls out CD Projekt for misleading investors about the true state of the game months back. In its current state, on gaming consoles, the game is basically unplayable. CD Projekt is reported to be ready to defend themselves. Here’s to hoping CD Projekt has really great lawyers.
Cyberpunk 2077 was doomed from the start. Not many games continue to be hit with many delays and fly off without a hitch. Since the game launched earlier this month, the game has suffered major bugs and glitches deeming the game unplayable on current-gen consoles. Sony has already pulled the game from the Playstation Store and is issuing full refunds. This deals a major blow to investors and the company behind Cyberpunk 2077. Soon, not many gamers are going to be lining up to shell out more for their product. Gamestop followed Sony’s lead and allowed full refunds (open or not), something the company has never allowed in the past.
Many game critics are divided on where to exactly place their anger. More than half of the gaming community considers CD Projekt, as a whole, the main villain. There are a few who chalk it up to themselves as putting too much pressure on the developers. Countless gamers have come to the defense of the devs with reports of overtime and stressful unreachable deadlines coming out.
Cyberpunk devs have been angry with management over their handling of the recent launch. In a video meeting earlier last week, devs looked towards their bosses to make sense of it all. According to a Bloomberg report, one employee asked the board of directors why they lied when they said Cyberpunk 2077 was complete back in January of this year. The directors were avid about helping improve the state of the game, sidestepping the question.
Cyberpunk 2077 was supposed to usher in a new era of gaming. First announced back in 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 has teased the deep and rich open world within the game. Adding film star Keanu Reeves, the game was built to destroy the RPG open world market. CD Projekt has announced they are delaying the addition of an online multiplayer mode, which was supposed to drop at the end of the year, to focus on working out the bugs. It was clear to everyone that the extra six weeks weren’t enough to get the game ready in time. Well, everyone but the big wigs over at CD Projekt.
