As 2022 approaches us, people worldwide simultaneously set goals for the next chapter of their lives. As someone who strongly advocates for the progression of the fashion industry, it hurts to watch society mistreat fashion year after year. To prevent and let go of these fashion mishaps, here are fashion resolutions everyone should follow.
1. Stop Supporting Fast-fashion
Shein, Zaful, Romwe, we’re all familiar or at least heard of these shopping platforms that have changed how clothes are viewed. These, along with fast-fashion companies alike, have forced society to devalue clothes. This is because of how cheap each product is sold at. When customers buy these insanely cheap clothes in bulk, it’s easy to forget the detrimental effects that come with each article of clothing purchased.
2. Donate and Repurpose Unwanted Clothes
Going off of fast fashion and its detrimental effects, everyone should get into a habit of donating and repurposing their clothes. The fashion industry and society are so caught up in a throwaway culture that most people don’t even know what discarding clothes causes. Not only does this apply to consumers, but also big producers that purposely destroy and “dispose of” their unsold products. The bi-product created obviously does not disappear. Destroying these goods does nothing but create more waste.
3. Don’t be Afraid to Wear Color
Something I’m even guilty of, many people lack to include color in their outfits. A portion of our society strictly wears neutral colors like black, gray, white, or brown, but why? Coming from someone who always ends up wearing an all-black outfit, it’s not like I don’t own colorful clothes. This can be traced back to the social construct that enables us to believe neutrals are the easy route when curating the perfect outfit. After deep thought, frankly, it has made outfits more boring. Thus, we need to get over this fashion mistake of always resorting to neutrals.
4. Stop Overhyping Luxury Brands
I never understood how people put luxury brands on such high pedestals. I get that fashion designers are incredibly talented and influential on others, but there’s a fine line that separates supporting a brand and bragging about it. At the end of the day, we need to remember that just because something is designer does not automatically make it raw. The singular thing that sets luxury apart from low-end is the fact that you spend a ridiculous amount of money. Thus, they get sucked into the idea of name brands that they waste their money on pieces that are not even dope, how tragic.
5. Stop Caring About What Others Think
Though easier said than done, society needs to let go of the unhealthy social norm of caring about how others perceive you. When people unapologetically wear what they want, they always present a powerful persona. This confidence they radiate is due to the mentality of unapologetically dressing however one pleases. The following quote illustrates how this mindset of not caring can b achieved “Your perception of me, is a reflection of you and my reaction to you is an awareness of me.”
