If you’re a fan of seeing celebrities in their best-dressed and out-of-the-box outfits, then the Met Gala event is the perfect event for you. Formally called the Costume Institute Gala, The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Starting in 1948, the Met Gala was just some midnight supper that guests could attend for just fifty dollars a ticket, but now one of the biggest fashion and costume events is an invite-only event. Which the people who are invited are carefully picked out by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
Every year the Met Gala event has a different theme that the attendees have to go by. The last gala being in May 2019 theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion. Where the attendees brought out their best campy gala look to impress the photographers around them.
With COVID-19 putting a stop to many events that usually happen in the world, Met Gala being one of those events, the fashion event will be returning this year.
But in a different and new way.
The Met Gala is back.
Andrew Bolton and Anna Wintour revealed that there will be not one, but two Costume Institute shows with theme based around “American Fashion”.
This years Met Gala will be on Sept 13th, and will return to the first Monday in May of next year.

Usually, one of the biggest fashion and costume fundraising events is just set for one day. Where celebrities walk the red carpet displaying their glamorous fashion for the world to see, followed by a night of dinner and exclusive party. However, this year Met Gala will be broken up into two events. According to Vogue, “The Costume Institute will host its first two-part exhibition, on the theme of American fashion, during 2021 and 2022. Part one, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” will open in the Anna Wintour Costume Center on September 18, 2021, and will remain on display when “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” opens on May 5, 2022, in the period rooms of the American Wing.”
It is also stated that both shows will run through until September 5th, 2020.
Once the theme was released, many people asked questions on what exactly is considered American fashion and how can attendees of this year’s gala add their own twist to stand out. The New York Times reported that when it comes American fashion theme it is extremely versatile. And yes, politics can be included in your gala outfit.
“We very consciously wanted this to be a celebration of the American fashion community, which suffered so much during the pandemic,” said the curator in charge of the Costume Institute of Metropolitan Museum of Art Andrew Bolton, who added that he also wanted the show to spur a broader reassessment of American fashion. He believes, he said, that it had often been unfairly dismissed because of its historic associations with “sportswear and the related values of utility, functionality, and pragmatism,” while European fashion was considered full of “expression and emotion.”
Bolton also explained how he thinks young American designers are slowly taking the stage front and center in the fashion industry. “I think American fashion is undergoing a renaissance, with young American designers at the vanguard of discussions around diversity, inclusion, sustainability, and conscious creativity. I find it incredibly exciting.”
With the months of 2021 rushing by, the fashion world is growing curious about how each attendee at part one of this year’s Met Gala will fulfill the theme of American fashion. With stars like Rihanna, Jared Leto, Lady Gaga, and many more always blowing the world away with their creative costumes for the gala every year, people are sitting on the edge of their seats wondering which celebrity will blow their minds this year.
