The definition of fashion is a popular trend, especially in styles of dress and ornament. Designers pull inspiration from all walks of life. I recently interviewed Elle magazine young Designer winner Alexandru Simedru where he talks about his clothing lines Simedru, People, Sorry Mom & Error as well as his design background.
Q. What was your experience growing up in Romania?
Alexandru: I was born and raised in a small city in Transylvania, Romania. Later on, I moved to the capital in Bucharest, to study fashion design.
Q. What was your inspiration for getting into fashion design?
Alexandru: I think my main inspiration was and still is society. I’ve always seen the art and drawing as an escape to another reality, my reality. Since I was a kid I felt the need to exteriorize what I feel, live, and accumulate to express myself. What I am trying to do with my design and collection is a manifesto concerning the society which is full of preconceptions. This is my voice and my way of expressing feelings.
Q. Are any of your clothing in any retail stores? Has your clothing been worn by any celebrities?
Alexandru: You can find my clothes on my official website and in stores that feature Romanian designers. Regarding celebrities, I dressed a number of public faces such as Antonia, Alexandra Stan , Inna and so on.
Q. Can you explain your inspiration for each of your collections?
Alexandru: My collections are connected. They are like a sequel of a movie, one that throughout its cultural and artistic vibes wants to dismantle preconceptions and to prove that art and clothing can bring people together. We are all storytelling so you can connect easier with others when they get a glimpse of the plot.
Q. What is your go-to fashion piece and why?
Alexandru: I think that the one go-to piece is definitely the hoodie. Its been a huge part of my every collection. The fact that it’s unisex and allows me to interpret it in so many contexts, makes it versatile and easy to wear for all ‘People”.
Q. Are you working on any new collections? if so what are you looking to for inspirations? What will this collection be named?
Alexandru: I’m currently working on S/S 18 collection that is due for February. I believe that it is going to be different in many ways but still connected. I was inspired by research that I did on subcultures and their influence on society. It follows the human behavior based on the clothes we wear.
Q. Are you a hands-on designer? Do you hand sew any of your items?
Alexandru: I am not a fully hands-on designer. I’m trying to be as involved as possible in every step from actual drawing and fabrics, but I don’t take part in the sewing.
Q. I noticed you went to school Romania. Can you tell me about your experience there?
Alexandru: Yes I am a graduate of the national of arts bucharest, where I’m currently following my Masters degree. I look at this experience as an amazing one. The school pushes you to discover your creativity and yourself among others. The latter is extremely important for a young designer. Knowing who you are and always be recognizable.
Q. What is the difference between American fashion VS Romanian Fashion?
Alexandru: I believe that in many ways European and American fashion synchronized. In Romania, we still struggle with the lack of creativity in street style but people are becoming more receptive. In the end, every market has its niche no matter of the country, so we address to the one that we design for. This year I decided to enter the American market, so I guess I’ll give a more detailed opinion based on my experience soon.
Q. Lastly, what does True Urban Culture mean to you?
Alexandru: In my opinion the true urban culture it’s a riot against society. Urban culture should be about freedom of expression by any means, lack of inhibition and superficiality.
