Jack Lucid : In the initial stages, our interest in fashion developed during our high school years. However, we reached a juncture where we felt a sense of stagnation, realizing that to progress further, we needed to acquire practical skills such as sewing. This led us to embark on a journey of studying fashion, immersing ourselves in a diverse array of styles. The pursuit was not only about gaining knowledge but also about honing our craft through practical experience. It was a process of exploration, seeking our distinctive style, and eventually, we successfully carved out our unique identity in the realm of fashion.

I read that this collection is inspired by the movement of being in the forest, the clothes burned, painted, defeated in motion… But what first caught my attention was the video games’ characters. Is there a small inspiration of that in your collection too?

Jack Lucid : Our collection is designed to craft characters, transforming our models into representatives of an urban tribe. “MOFANETE,” meaning “in the forest,” symbolizes a journey of self-discovery, with individuals seeking their true and inner selves. It delves into the exploration of a darker aspect of oneself, ultimately finding enlightenment and stepping into the light.

In essence, entering your MOFANETE represents delving into your “dark side” and emerging from it into the light, having discovered and embraced your authentic self—the unveiling of our true selves.

I can see that there is a lot of underground, archive, and streetwear vibe in your collections. As a young emerging designer, who were and are your biggest inspirations?

Devins : We aim to blend abstract art with graffiti, steering clear of drawing direct inspiration from established styles. Our approach is rooted in a surrealistic perspective, stemming from the depths of our own minds. The punk and grunge aesthetic serve as significant sources of inspiration for us. Within these aesthetics, we actively seek a duality that transcends traditional gender norms, exploring the interplay between masculinity and femininity to create a unique and dynamic fusion.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

Devins : Our primary inspiration stems from our own lives—the experiences and emotions we are currently undergoing. Interestingly, our muse extends beyond the realm of fashion designers to include painters, particularly those like Picasso, Dali, and Jean Michel Bastiard. We draw from the rich tapestry of emotions and expressions found in their works, finding resonance with their artistic vision. Additionally, architects play a role in inspiring us, offering a different perspective that enriches our creative process. This eclectic blend of influences contributes to a unique and multidimensional approach in our work.

Your MOFANETESS24 collection is made in collaboration with New Rock. Why New Rock? And are there any designers or artists out there you’d be keen on collaborating with?

Devins & Jack Lucid : New Rock is a representation of our designs, embodying a sense of hardness and heightened expressiveness. This aesthetic alignment extends beyond the visual appeal and resonates with us on an emotional level. The collaboration with New Rock’s team has been an incredible experience, marked by shared aesthetics and a creative synergy. New Rock’s distinctive style, characterized by a certain destructiveness, offers versatility in how it can be worn. It holds a special place for us, being one of the first brands we explored, and its popularity among teenagers and young adults in Madrid further solidifies its significance in our creative journey.

How did you guys formulate your brand?

Devins & Jack Lucid : Before the actual creation of our brand, it was crucial for us to establish a clear understanding of what fashion meant to us. Up until last year, it primarily existed as a conceptual idea. The initial consideration was to potentially present our work at events like Madrid Fashion Week.

However, the turning point came last year when our concept transitioned from a mere thought to a tangible reality. The years spanning from 2018 to 2022 were dedicated to the gradual process of bringing our brand to life, involving the formulation of ideas, the development of our unique aesthetic, and the practical steps required to establish a presence in the world of fashion.

Yes, last year was really a turning point where your brand takes matters in the universe.

Devins : Regarding collaborations, we currently don’t have specific individuals in mind. However, our inspiration is drawn from numerous artists at present. We are confident that as we progress on our path, collaborations with great artists who align with our energy and style will naturally come our way. Our focus remains on diligently working on the brand, refining its vision and aesthetics. We believe that by staying true to our creative direction, the right collaborations will organically present themselves, bringing the perfect individuals and partnerships into our creative journey.

Why did you choose Madrid as the flagship city of your brand? Do you feel like your brand can grow here or did you ever think of moving to a bigger fashion European capital?

Jack Lucid : Growing up in this environment, surrounded by family and friends, has significantly shaped our experiences. One of our aspirations is to challenge and break down barriers within the “black people community” here. We are determined to make a lasting impact on the fashion industry in Spain, marking a distinct “before and after.”

An important milestone in this journey was becoming the first black designers to participate in the Madrid Fashion Week—an accomplishment we view with immense pride. This achievement has been a longstanding dream for us, symbolizing a breakthrough in the fashion landscape.

Looking ahead, we aspire to expand our horizons globally, reaching places like London, Paris, Milan, and beyond. Our goal is not only to showcase our art but also to engage in a dynamic exchange—learning, teaching, establishing new connections, and contributing to the vibrant tapestry of the international fashion scene.

 

Did your family always support you?

Jack Lucid : Certainly, the journey of art is inherently personal and individualistic. Often, the process is a lived experience, filled with challenges and personal struggles that may not be fully comprehended by one’s family. However, as family witnesses the dedication, financial investment, and sheer effort put into the craft, a deeper understanding develops. They come to recognize that art is not just a passion but a way of life, and this realization often fosters a supportive environment where loved ones are more inclined to assist in achieving the objectives and goals set by the artist.

Are you working on any new projects before the end of the year?

Devins : We have exciting projects coming up! Two pending campaigns and a focus on pop-ups to create everyday wear sound like fantastic endeavors. Planning another show for the beginning of next year adds to that anticipation.

Where do you see yourself and your brand 5 years from now?

Devins : vision includes expanding our presence with shows worldwide, collaborating with a broader array of photographers and stylists, and surrounding ourselves with the most accomplished professionals in the industry. Within this timeframe, we aim to establish a comprehensive vision in Spain that resonates with people and garners widespread acceptance.

Personally, I am keen to explore opportunities in cinema, acting, and music. My background in acting has provided valuable insights applicable to the world of fashion, such as the nuances of creating and embodying characters. Our goal is to dedicate ourselves entirely to this endeavor, working at full capacity and collaborating with individuals who inspire us, fostering a sense of fulfillment.

Having accomplished two shows in the past two years, we believe that the next five years will afford us ample time for transformative changes, personal growth, and the opportunity to surround ourselves with the best influences.

What does True Urban Culture mean to you?

Jack Lucid : In the realm of fashion driven by brands adhering to established norms, the urban culture stands out as a distinctive and liberating force. Unlike environments bound by rigid guidelines, urban culture thrives on boundless creation, emotions, feelings, and sheer craziness. This unique space gives rise to pieces that defy conventional limits, pieces that simply cannot emerge outside the dynamic and unrestrained atmosphere of urban culture. It’s a realm that demands our care and appreciation.

True urban culture is more than a style; it’s a way of living fashion in a freer and more uninhibited manner. Within its embrace, creativity knows no bounds, and the fashion that emerges is characterized by a bold and unapologetic spirit. It’s a celebration of the unconventional, a space where the crazy and the unexpected not only coexist but thrive.
