Their luxury apparel brand is based in New York City and has been seen on a countless list of top celebrities. Kylie Jenner,Jennifer Lopez, Brittney Spears, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, and Nicki Minaj are just some of the few names these designers have worked with. The pieces worn not only make bold statements but grab the attention of the fashion world. The Blonds NYC have dominated New York City Fashion week for years and will continue to do so with their anything but normal sense of design. What got you into designing?
Philippe: I have been interested in fashion since I was a child. My father taught me to sew when I was very young and I have been making pieces for myself to wear ever since!
Who do you draw inspiration from today?
David: We draw inspiration from our clients. Each client is unique so each project is exciting in different ways and is a continuous source of inspiration for new ideas.
What keeps you motivated creatively?
Phillipe: Every day is different so each day feels new and fresh! Every day is exciting and presents a different challenge.
How do you feel about the current state of the fashion industry?
David: It is an unusual time but a perfect opportunity for designers to express themselves in unusual ways.
What questions do you ask before you begin any design project?
David: Various things like theme, color, and fabrication play an integral part. However, the most important part of any project is the client’s vision and successfully realizing it.
Could you explain a project you’ve completed that has made you the proudest?
Phillipe: Our work with the MAC Aids Fund. We are very passionate about this cause.
As a duo, what are each of your roles?
David: Phillipe is the head designer and I am the Creative Director, but our jobs overlap constantly.
What would you currently describe your style as?
Phillipe: Street meets Couture.
What are some trends you are looking for this year?
David: We don’t follow trends!
Can you tell us who the first client was that wore your product and for what occasion?
Phillipe: Beyoncé in her music video for “Upgrade U”.
Of all the positives you’ve gained from the industry what do you feel has brought you the most joy ?
Both: Being able to do what we love!
What was the Fall 2017 show all about?
David: For Fall 2017 we took from Film Noir, Tamara de Lempicka and the 1980s.
Are there any pieces you are most excited about and why?
Phillipe: My catsuit (the finale look from Fall 2017) was one of the most intricate pieces we have done to date. It has over 100,000 hand embroidered pearls and crystals on it!
You have been a part of New York Fashion Week since 2008, what have you learned from being a part of the world’s biggest fashion show?
David: Our first show was for Fall 2008, and we recently celebrated our 10-year anniversary as a brand. We’ve learned that the most important thing when working is to express yourself and love what you do!
How have your shows continued to progress through-out the years?
David: We evolve in different ways each season.
How do you prepare for the shows?
Both: Lots of coffee and a great sense of humor!
