Following the death of George Floyd by the hands of Minneapolis police, there have been thousands of protests and demonstrations across the United States & even millions across the world, supporting the #BlackLivesMatter movement. #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd ✊🏿
At the time of these demonstrations, people began to take the protests to local city officials and even in some extreme cases, began rioting and looting the many cities across the United States. Some states that went nationwide for these demonstrations were New York, Kentucky, Missouri, Georgia, & the District of Columbia.
As people began to fight for justice for George Floyd, states such as Kentucky began to fight for justice for 26-year-old Breonna Taylor, who was fatally shot by Louisville Metro PD at her home as they searched her house without a legitimate search warrant. #JusticeForBreonnaTaylor✊🏿 💔.
In recent news, a 19-year old #BlackLiveMatter activist Oluwatoyin “Toyin” Salau who was kidnapped, raped, and brutally murdered by 49-year old Aaron Glee in Tallahassee, Florida. This story actually hurts my heart even to write this. #JusticeForToyin ✊🏿 💔
With social media flooded with all these tragic events, the fact that justice has not been fully served really angers my soul because to see my people dying every day by the same forces that we supposedly put our “trust” to protect and to serve our communities, we must unite and put our energy into creating policy reforms for the people and only the people!
In recent news, during the midst of COVID-19 and the riots, a 27-year old man named Rayshard Brooks was killed by the hands of Atlanta police outside a Wendy’s establishment on University Ave. Following the untimely death of Rayshard Brooks, a woman named Natalie White set a fire at Wendy’s while protestors were rioting in the street. Since then, Natalie White has been taken into custody and the officers involved in the shooting death of Brooks have been charged.
In the same light, rapper and actor, Clifford “T.I.” Harris has been one of the few celebrities to speak out about the riots that took place, especially at events in his hometown of Atlanta. Notably, for speaking up about the protests/riots in Atlanta, alongside Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on May 30th.
Since then, the rapper had been in correspondence with Clark Atlanta University president, Dr. George T. French about teaching a business course called, “Business in Trap Music,” alongside professor and hip-hop scholar, Dr. Melva Williams.
“In higher education, it is important that we challenge, empower, and equip our students with the proper resources to excel,” said CAU President George T. French Jr.
“I believe the best way to do this is to understand their culture and create life-long experiences that will not only motivate our scholars but present them with opportunities to help them become globally competitive.”
According to Diverse Higher Education, Clark Atlanta University and one of its alumni have announced full scholarships for the four children of Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year-old Black man who was fatally shot by Atlanta police on June 12.
