Killer Mike has always done it for the culture, from being an activist, a rapper, and businessman. Now, the Run The Jewels rapper has teamed up with the former mayor of Atlanta, Andrew J. Young, and Ryan Glover, Bounce TV network founder, to develop an important tool in the Black and Latinx communities – digital banking.
The modern banking system Greenwood launched this month and focuses on fairness in the financial system. It is a new way of building generational wealth in communities that aren’t given the blueprint to thrive in the economy.
“Today, a dollar circulates for 20 days in the white community, but only six hours in the Black community,” Killer Mike expressed in a press release. “Moreover, a Black person is twice as likely as a white person to be denied a mortgage. This lack of fairness in the financial system is why we created Greenwood.”
Some of the Greenwood banking features include saving and spending accounts, community reinvestment, no hidden fees, Apple and Android pay, global ATM network, two-day early pay, peer-to-peer transfers, and mobile deposit.
Greenwood will also be giving back to the community by feeding five meals to a family, donating to UNCF and NAACP, and providing small business grants of $10k monthly to a Black or Latinx business. These donations are given through creating an account and spare change round-ups.
In an Instagram post from the official Greenwood account, the company and Killer Mike expressed how determined they were of making this brand special for Black and Latinx communities.
“#ThisIsOurTime Not waiting for anybody else,” the caption read. “Not begging anybody else. Time to build our own. Greenwood is proud to be the embodiment of @KillerMike’s vision of black wealth and self-empowerment. That’s why he is one of our Founders.”
