JT: Before we start this interview, I want to to say thanks for having me in your work space. Not only did you change the hair industry, you did it in a manner where its affordable on any budget. As a child, did you see yourself owning a business?
SR: Your welcome and thank you for accepting the invitation. As a child, I always wanted to stand out and do something different. Growing up in Euclid, Ohio I imagined myself doing something big and helping women to achieve their goals. My upbringing gave me the ability to dream. In the 7th grade, I started a group called the Diamond Club and it was my 3 friends and we would do work around the neighborhood. Working from an early age helped me find structure and a sense of independence. Being a young mother, I had to provide for my offspring. In the end, my faith and keeping a positive attitude got me through the hard times.
JT: What advice can you give to people who want to start their own business?
SR: As humans, we come into this world looking for guidance and sometimes without it we become afraid. At some point you have to make and decision and stand by it. In life we face trails but we overcome them by staring adversity in its face. I gain so much strength by eliminating the word “No” out of my vocabulary. Earlier in my career, I used my web design and marketing skills to generate income for my family. I also extended my skills to friends and companies who were seeking help. Its all about building your brand and figuring out how you can make your mark on the world. Follow your heart and you will be happy in the end.
JT: Lets talk about Curlkalon and your natural hair story!
SR: Well I’ve been natural for 12 years and bonded with more women over time by having natural hair. When women start to talk about hair, its a safe haven for everyone. In the past, it took hours for me to do my hair. I was looking for a new way to create cute hairstyles without the hassle. Curlkalon has been in business for 2 plus years now and we launched on Mother’s Day 2015. Its very easy to install and it takes about 45 minutes. Its synthetic hair with 4 different types of curls with a variety of lengths and colors. You can even wear your hair style for 6-8 weeks. We have shipped hair world wide and I am looking forward to more growth!
JT: Where do you see Curlkalon in the next 5 years?
SR: Being a global brand in the textured hair industry where women can embrace their beauty with natural hair. When I see women wearing Curlkalon Hair, I see a woman that confident, strong, beautiful and proud of her natural hair.
JT: What does ‘True Urban Culture’ means to you?
SR: True Urban Culture means connecting with the essence of where things started and identifying what looks are trendy yet conveys a message that is unique.
