The scent of space has been around for decades in order to familiarize astronauts with the smell of space before ascending into orbit. Recently, NASA has attempted to take this to the next level by marketing the scent of space to consumers as a perfume. NASA originally hired Steve Pearce back in 2008, a chemist based in the U.K., to re-create the smell of space, who turned the scent into a perfume. Here is a trailer for a preview of what this distinctive scent smells like, where one astronaut describes space smelling like gun-powder and another describes space smelling like a burnt cookie:
In order to bring this scent to life, a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign was created and launched. According to the webpage, $614,376 USD has been donated by 12,995 backers so far. If you’d like to be the next backer, you can donate here
Shoppers are able to pre-order the perfume, with the Eau De Space Kickstarter webpage stating that “We’re ready to manufacturer the smell and all we need is meet our MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity). Then we can bottle and ship the smell of space directly to you.” If interested, you can pre-order a bottle of Eau De Space for just $29 through INDIEGOGO:
Along with receiving a bottle yourself, NASA will also donate a bottle to a local K-12 STEM program. By donating to children in need who are interested in STEM, NASA’s hope is that this scent may inspire children to become astronauts, scientists, or engineers, therefore promoting children’s educational success in STEM fields.
If the minimum order quantity is met, the Kickstarter webpage states that Eau De Space is estimated to deliver in October 2020.
