Like they always say, history always repeats itself and that can be in fashion, music, and art. Many of the songs that we love today and in the previous decade believe or not have been sampled from songs that came out way before our time. Here is a list of 5 songs that we love that you may not know have been sampled. If you would like to see if any of your favorite songs have been sampled you can go to this website. http://www.whosampled.com/browse/year/2016/samples/8/
1. Emotions by Destinys child
Emotions by Destinys Child debuted in 2001, on the Survivor album. This song was a hit especially because this group was killing it around the early 2000’s. But what a lot of people do not know is that Destinys Child re-recorded the song that was originally made famous in the 1970s.. The original version was written and recorded by The Bee Gees.
Check out Destinys Child version and The Bee Gee’s version of the song below .
2. Money Showers by Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Ty Dolla Sign
Money Showers is a fairly recent song that just come out. It’s featured on Remy Ma and Fat Joe’s recent collab album Plata O Plomo. The song is unforgettable based on the beat and the chorus. If you are a New Edition fan, then you automatically know why the song sounds familiar. “Money Showers” is sampled from a track from New Edition lead vocalist, Ralph Tresvant, self titled debut album titled “Do What I Gotta Do.” The lyrics and the vocals on this song are phenomenal. If you haven’t heard it before then click on the video below to get familiar with it.
3. Deja Vu By J. Cole
It’s no secret that when J. Cole drops an album he kills it. Well on his last album there was a lot of talk about his song Deja Vu, which sounds very familiar to Bryson Tiller’s “Exchange” track. He cleared that up very fast in an interview by letting everyone know that the song was his first, but he just dropped it after Bryson and there’s nothing wrong with that. Both songs have a great flow and lyrics. With just some minor tweaks made to the original sampled song, nothing takes away from the fact that the song is sampled from a very popular song called “Swing My Way” by K.p and Envyi. If you’re not familiar with the song “Swing My Way” then click the link below, it might just become one of your favorite songs.
4. Rain On Me Intro Bryson Tiller
This song is fairly new but is a favorite of many. Bryson Tiller just dropped his new album True To Self, and the “Rain On Me” intro is the first song on the album. Bryson Tiller is a great artist and often samples songs from the 90’s to pay homage to the artists of years past. With this intro, he sampled Rain By SWV and mashed it up, to start the intro to his sophomore album. The song is not too long but not too short, give it a listen.
5. Weston Road Flows By Drake
Last but not least is “Weston Road Flows”! Drake is an amazing artist who always switches his style of music up whether it be by changing the genre of his songs or sampling classic songs, he does it all. In his song, “Weston Road Flows” he samples “Mary’s Joint” by Mary J Blige. Drake’s music is very well known so you’ve probably heard this song many of times but if you haven’t heard Mary’s Joint, then check it out below.
