Would you choose a job or career that you love or would you choose it only for financial gain? Some people choose their careers based on love and others for money, but which option really would be best? There’s a cliché saying out there: “Money can’t buy happiness”. But can it? Research says it might. According to CNBC, research from 2010 shows that “people tend to feel happier the more money they make”. It is worth noting that CNBC also stated that according to other studies, people that had jobs that gave them “meaning and purpose” were happier, no matter how much money they made.
It is easy to understand people who work for financial gain only because money can at least grant us a better life physically. It can give us the best home, car, food, healthcare, etc. This sense of stability and being able to support ourselves as well as our loved ones give us a sense of accomplishment which can in turn make us feel good. However, can one be fulfilled by choosing a career that doesn’t bring joy? Why look forward only to payday when you can be enjoying something that you would do for free?
When you choose a career you don’t love, you wake up every morning dreading going to work and you end up not doing so well because your heart isn’t in it. This will cause you to complain more and put you in a negative and regretful space mentally even though you’re making a lot of money. The worst thing about it is that you can’t escape it because you feel it brings you and your family the things you need physically.
Sure, stability is important. We want to be able to afford the best lives we can have for ourselves and our loved ones. If we are being honest, having the things we want does make us happy, and providing for the people we love as well as seeing them happy makes us all the happier, but why settle for a career you don’t love? Why not have it all and choose something that you’ll enjoy and that will give you a lot of money as well?
Many people and cultures have their own opinions on success and money. There is one thing that we can all agree on though: there is no happiness without love. Think about it, if you are in a career or a job that you don’t love, there will not be any happiness, at least while you’re doing it. If you are in a relationship with someone you don’t love there will be no happiness there either. Get a career that pay’s amazingly well! Please do so, but be sure to also make sure that it is something that you are passionate about not only will you be better at your job if you love it, but you will be even more happy and fulfilled than someone who has the money they love but the career they don’t.
