The resurgence of NFL receiver Odell Beckham Jr’s career in Cleveland is officially done. What was supposed to be the glorious return of OBJ turned into a lesson in PR, leading up to his final days with the Browns. During his time with the Browns, OBJ clashed with other team members, QB Baker Mayfield especially, about the current state of his status with the team. Despite not being traded before the NFL trade deadline, things worsen when OBJ’s father chimed in by posting a video on social media of his son not being targeted. Cleveland had no choice but to release him after that.
After going unclaimed on waivers, OBJ signed with the Los Angeles Rams on a one-year deal. Many are wondering how the fading star will fit into the already loaded offense. A few reports see OBJ suiting up as a punt man or filling in for the loss of Robert Woods (torn ACL.) Odell will make his Rams debut this Monday against the San Fransico 49ers.
In the end, Odell did take some time out to thank the fans and the city of Cleveland in a heartfelt letter. He posted the letter to his social media. While the letter doesn’t mention any of his former Browns teammates, it does seem to include select members of the Cleveland Browns staff.
“I want to thank the city of Cleveland for welcoming me with open arms. My goal was always to help bring a championship to the city of Cleveland from the first day I became a member of the Cleveland Browns,” Beckham wrote. “Through all the ups and downs, injuries and rehab, I am forever grateful to have played in front of some of the greatest fans ever. Dawg Pound, I thank you for embracing me and showing me so much LOVE!”
Starting his career with the New York Giants, Odell became a star. After a while off field issues plagued the rest of his career there. In 2019, Odell was traded to the Cleveland Browns. From there, Odell has had seen on-field issues hurt his performance, failing to reach his New York status. In his time with the Browns, Odell caught 74 passes for 1,035 yards and four touchdowns. Injuries limited him to just seven games in 2020, and he amassed just 232 yards and no scores in six games this season before being waived earlier this week and signing with the Rams.
