The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that American gymnast Jordan Chiles will lose her bronze medal in the floor exercise at the Paris Games, which will be awarded to Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu instead. This decision follows a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling that determined the USA’s inquiry into Chiles’ score was filed too late.
Initially, Chiles’ score of 13.666 was successfully challenged, raising her score and securing her the bronze. However, CAS ruled that the challenge was made after the one-minute deadline, leading to the reinstatement of Chiles’ original score and promoting Bărbosu to third place with her score of 13.700.
The IOC confirmed this adjustment and is coordinating with both the Romanian Olympic Committee and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) for the medal reallocation. The USOPC plans to appeal the decision, asserting errors in the scoring and the appeal process by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and CAS.
In response, USA Gymnastics expressed their disappointment and reiterated their support for Chiles. The competition concluded dramatically, with Chiles initially securing third place after a successful challenge, which later was overturned due to the timing issue. Following the ruling, Chiles announced a break from social media for her mental health.
