Bronny James has officially joined the Los Angeles Lakers, and it appears his agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, played a strategic role in steering him there. Known for representing LeBron James, Paul reportedly took steps to dissuade other NBA teams from drafting Bronny, a USC standout.
Former Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers revealed on ESPN’s NBA Draft show that Paul was actively telling teams not to draft Bronny, threatening that the young player would head to Australia if they did. Myers stated, “Rich Paul’s calling teams and saying, ‘Don’t take Bronny James. If you take him, he’s going to Australia.’ He has a plan, and he has a place.”
This revelation came during the early second round, with Myers later reiterating his point as the Lakers’ 55th overall pick approached. “I think we can all imagine what the goal is for Rich Paul in that situation. There’s a difference between hoping that happens and making sure that happens,” Myers added.
Paul’s strategy seemed effective, as teams ahead of the Lakers in the second round appeared to heed his warnings, allowing Bronny to be selected by the Lakers at No. 55. The James family was visibly emotional during the announcement, with Paul seated beside Bronny.
This selection marks a historic moment, as LeBron and Bronny James become the first father-son duo to play in the NBA simultaneously. Although LeBron has not yet confirmed his return to the Lakers for the next season, Bronny’s presence on the team provides a compelling reason for him to do so.
Bronny’s journey to the NBA has been met with mixed reviews, largely due to his underwhelming freshman year stats at USC. However, his athleticism and determination have been evident, leaving room for potential growth under the guidance of his father and the Lakers’ new head coach, JJ Redick.
Despite some skepticism regarding his NBA readiness, Bronny’s selection by the Lakers fulfills a long-discussed dream of seeing LeBron and Bronny play together. Rich Paul’s maneuvers played a crucial role in making this dream a reality.
