If You Like: Passion Pit, Goth Babe, The Night Cafe
The universe has a very funny way of bringing such a colliding mess of artistic beauty into a single canvas. In the music realm, it’s hard stumbling and expressing yourself while still trying to find that space in which you operate. In the beauty of chaos, peaceful harmony can be manifested. It’s the exact messy fate filled chaos that brought Micah Gordon and Eli Hirsch together and set them on the path to becoming indie pop’s next great band. Their band name, courtship., is such a fitting description of what this duo is all about.
Since the debut of their 2016 single, “Love For Everyone,” courtship. has continued to shock the music media world with its catchy, feel-good tunes striking at the heart of many alike. Earning high remarks from media outlets like NME and Billboard.com, the band looked to outshine the indie music scene early on. Both members spent quite an amount of time playing supportive roles at the beginning of their careers. It became clear soon that both artists were destined for more. In between touring with fellow indie-pop acts like Passion Pit and Magic City Hippies, the electric indie duo released a handful of singles. It led to the release of their 2018 debut album, Denial in Paradise.
The album allowed for courtship. embrace their unique storytelling and shock indie production. Taking notes from MGMT, Foster the People, and alt-j, courtship, tweaks, and switches what it means to be an “indie-pop band.” Some tracks are similar in feeling but timeless in style. At times, the band doesn’t take itself or music too seriously. The playful jabber and lyrics make for consistent listening while other times see the duo touch on darker tones.
Over the past year, courtship, put out new music. Marking a return to music after a year off, it seems the band took time to mature and add new products to their arsenal. “Prom” is one of their more recent work, pitting ear-catching vocals and laid down 80s pop hints. With the new year well underway, courtship. continues to amaze and keep pace on track to their upcoming second full-length album.
