She took inspiration from artists like Gracie Abrams and Taylor Swift, who is “really proud” of the hit song.

She shared that she wrote most of the song while crying in her living room. “The pain is definitely real in that song,” said Rodrigo, “But it was really, really natural and organic, like very much me writing in the depth of my emotion.”
While Rodrigo has not gone on the record to say what or who the song is about, many fans are speculating the song was written about her ex-boyfriend and co-star on HSMTMTS, Joshua Bassett.
The lyrics, “You’re probably with that blonde girl who always made me doubt. She’s so much older than me. She’s everything I’m insecure about,” seem to fit the description of Sabrina Carpenter, who Bassett dated after Rodrigo.
The song also says, “I got my driver’s license last week, just like we always talked about, ’cause you were so excited for me to finally drive up to your house.” Fans believe that Bassett taught Rodrigo how to drive because of a social media post that resurfaced in LeBlanc Updates’ YouTube video titled, “every song joshua & olivia have written about each other!”
In the post, Rodrigo shares how her first time driving with Basset was on her 16th Birthday.
While this may seem like a stretch, the main reason for speculations is that Basset released his own song on Friday entitled “Lie, Lie, Lie.” On the singer’s Instagram story he explained the song was written about a friend who lied to him.
“It always sucks to hear that someone you thought you could trust would throw you under the bus when it benefits them,” said Basset.
Regardless of the rumors and speculations, “Drivers License” is a hit and we’re anxiously waiting for more music from Rodrigo.
