Art is subjective and that point couldn’t be more proven then with the reaction to the visual of “The Weekend” by arguably the Best new artist of 2017, SZA. Folks was clamoring for the release of this visual off of what could be considered the anthem for many women on her debut album, CTRL. Unfortunately, fan reaction hasn’t been very positive for the song with some even going as far to call it “extra footage for the visual’s director, Solange Knowles, “Cranes in the Sky” music video.
Me when I seen that Sza’s “The Weekend” video was just some extra footage Solange left out of cranes in the sky pic.twitter.com/P7nEMVbjKG

But what if some of us are missing the finite details of the visual ? For the record, this is just my theory and an off the wall theory at that. But it’s a Saturday and the hits need to keep coming so let’s get into it.
First let’s start off with the lighting and hues in the visual. The colors are very washed out and grainy. I personally believe that this was done to reflect the tone of the song. Granted there are some women/men that don’t mind playing the role of the other woman/man, but i’m sure all of you will agree when I say that it could be draining and very depressing which the cinematography clearly illustrates.
Now, let’s focus on what’s not there. Outside of SZA, there is not one person in this video. There’s an empty parking lot with no cars and a building with no aesthetic. What does this symbolize ? Well to answer that, let’s focus on the key parts of the chorus.
You’re like 9 to 5, I’m the weekend
Make him lose his mind every weekend
You take Wednesday, Thursday
Then just send him my way
Think I got it covered for the weekend
I could only imagine for any human being playing the role of side chick or side dude, this could be very draining on your mental fragmentation to the point that it begins to take a toll on your psyche and destroys everything around you to the point that you are the only thing left standing.
For the record, this theory is not purely to give a breakdown of psychological health but to demonstrate how sometimes being boastful and acceptive of your position in any love triangle that does not put you in high esteem could wear you down and drain you of any and all vibrancy colors around you and leave you with a world that is empty and dull for as long as you accept it.
This is just my theory and if this was the underlying message of the visual, then well done Solange. But if not, then I thank you for reading and maybe an update of a Brandy and Monica “Boy is mine” story for the visual would have suffice.
