Whether you’re currently living in the South, North, East or West, you have probably heard Bad and Boujee play at least once in your life. The hip-hop world is all the rage over Migos’ new album, Culture. This album was released on January 27th, 2017. Although it happened so early in the year, fans have been waiting on this album for a while. Due to all the hype and anticipation created through social media when the Migos’ official Twitter account tweeted their album would be out soon, fans have been eagerly waiting. To introduce them properly for those who may be first-time listeners, the Migos, a rap trio from Gwinnett County in Georgia are individually known as Quavo, Takeoff and Offset. Their song lyrics mostly consist of them talking about money, girls, drugs, sex, and spending habits. But for those who look deeper into the content will realize the message the Migos are trying to relay is to work hard because it will pay off in the end. They speak on how they grew up with nothing and now they have it all due to their persistence, dedication, and love for music.
The Culture album consist of 13 tracks, including their three singles “Bad and Boujee”, “T-Shirt”, and “Call Casting”. The three singles also have music videos to represent them visually on the Migos’ official YouTube page. The features you will find on this album include Dj Khaled, Lil Uzi Vert, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, and Travis Scott. This album contains songs produced by Metro Boomin, Zaytoven and Murda Beatz, just to name a few who worked on this project.
The album first starts off with Dj Khaled introducing the Migo’s second studio album, Culture. In this song, Dj Khaled begins the intro by saying if you have ever doubted the Migos, you played yourself. The Migos are here to take it all. The Migos talk about their success, money, spending habits, and the girls. This song pretty much sets the tone for how the whole album is going to be. Transitioning from the intro to the second song, “T-Shirt”, the Migos reinforce that they are on top right now and that they’re unstoppable. In the second verse on “T-Shirt” as well as on “Big on Big”, they speak of their life experiences and what they had to go through and overcome to get to where they are today. Aside from life experiences in general, they speak on trapping throughout their whole album. “Call Casting” is heavy on the trap references. Regardless, the album has drugs references in more than half of the album. With the Migos’ net worth and wealth increasing, so have their spending habits. In “Bad and Boujee”, “Slippery”, “Kelly Price”, “Brown Paper Bag” and “Deadz”, the Migos fully flaunt their wealth and material expenses. Along with the money, comes with the girls. They talk about girls all throughout the album but the main songs where girls are the subject of their lyrics are “Bad and Boujee”, “Out Yo Way”, and “Kelly Price”.
Overall, this album has been received well. For the first time ever, the Migos earned the #1 spot on the Billboards chart for “Best Album”. Culture is currently sitting at the #2 spot along with “Bad and Boujee”. I believe there has been an immense growth from the Migos, not just within their career, but as artists. They have always been known for their club hits ever since “Versace” ft. Drake, but now they are reaching heights they have never reached before. Huge recognition was given from “Atlanta” producer Donald Glover at the 2017 Golden Globes Award ceremony to the Migos. Glover shouted them out by saying, “I really wanna thank the Migos, not for being in the show, but for making ‘Bad and Boujee’. Like that’s the best song ever.” With that shout out, the Migos’ exposure grew even more allowing their song to skyrocket through the roof. Also, it is also said Takeoff will be adding his verse on to the song as well. Another artist that showed their support for the Migos’ album was Kanye West. I also picked up on the heavy Kanye and Travis Scott influence there seems to be on this album. I believe it’s mostly because of the autotune in their songs. In “Kelly Price”, it’s almost hard to tell Quavo and Travis Scott apart. Quavo and Travis Scott have also announced a collaboration album coming soon. The Migos have projects coming soon, we can only expect bigger and better things from here on out. In all, this album is definitely a must download. Their alliterations, witty lines, and catchy hooks will have you wanting to listen to this album all day long.
