Usually, while on the outside looking in, it might seem like celebrities have it all, wealth, fame, and complete freedom. Due to their fame and fortune, the average person forgets that celebrities are human beings as well. They experience similar issues as us, including dealing with disrespectful comments from various haters. This issue is discussed on Lizzo’s newest single, “Rumors” that features Cardi B.
“Rumors” is Lizzo’s first single in two years and she and Cardi B are not wasting any time putting their haters in their place. On the Funk-pop track, both rappers playfully address false rumors that they have heard about themselves. Lizzo addresses rumors involving her body, love life, and mental health. “Last year, I thought I would lose it / Read s— on the internet” she raps. Meanwhile, Cardi B addresses rumors involving plastic surgery and her chart success.
Tanu Muino directed the video for the song and, it is very playful and silly. The video takes inspiration from ancient Greek culture. When I first saw the video it instantly reminded me of the Classic Disney film Hercules. In the music video, both Lizzo and Cardi B are ancient Greek Muses that are doing various activities, such as sitting on thrones and dancing with their backup dancers.
Lyrically, “Rumors” is refreshing because two celebrities who face constant criticism are nonchalantly calling out their haters. They are letting their haters know that they cannot break them down with their vicious lies and attacks. Their approach is commendable because they are changing the narrative that people have created about them.
Although the lyrics are challenging the general public’s opinion, the beat is dated. The Funk-pop instrumental is not any different than what Lizzo has released before. After a few spins, the production of the song gets annoying, which makes it unbearable. Overall, “Rumors” is a catchy shit talking song that Pop Radio will overplay for months to come.
