After releasing songs like “Show U Off” and “Gravity,” R&B singer Brent Faiyaz is back with “Wasting Time.” “Wasting Time” was produced by the iconic duo The Neptunes and it features Drake. The beat of the song is reminiscent of the spacey-electronic-video game sounds that The Neptunes dominated the early 2000’s with. It is laced with heavy electro-synth pads and booming 808s.
Against the synth-heavy instrumental Faiyaz, croons about wanting his love to share more of her free time with him. “If you’re gonna waste your time / then waste your time with me / you can have all the space / more than you need / it’s no pressure, girl / if you got time to waste/waste it with me,” he sings in the chorus. Meanwhile, Drake delivers his typical monotone lazy flow as he gives an emotional, personal backstory about his past relationships.
This song is exceptionally smooth which makes for a good listen. It is perfect for those late nights when you’re deep in your feelings about someone. All in All, the song is not innovative in the least bit, but it is a great nod to the early 2000’s R&B we all love. The Neptunes proves that their signature sound will forever be timeless.
